PERSONAL STATEMENT:

George Otieno is a veterinary surgeon as well as a food security and livelihoods expert. He has worked with several international non-government organizations in food security programming and implementation in emergency, post-war/recovery and development contexts.

He is currently the in-regional country coordinator for the Borlaug Higher Education for Agricultural Research and Development (BHEARD) project in Kenya, assisting students attending Egerton University and the University of Nairobi. He is involved in the recruitment of program fellows, provides orientation to the BHEARD scholars on USAID requirements and the Kenyan higher education system, and also acts as general liaison between the BHEARD scholars, Kenyan universities and BHEARD management at Michigan State University. 

Dr. Otieno is also in charge of all administrative and financial management matters at the regional office. Dr. Otieno earned a bachelor of veterinary medicine degree from the University of Nairobi, a master’s degree in agriculture and rural development from Kenya Methodist University, and is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Nairobi.
